'European Space-enabled Connectivity Solutions for the Car of the Future’

A Workshop organised by the German Space Agency at DLR, the European Space Agency, 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), the German ESA Business Applications Ambassador, and supported by BMW. It will be held in Munich from November 6 - 7, 2023.

The digital transformation of the automotive industry is currently disrupting its traditional business: competitive differentiation is increasingly software-, rather than hardware based. Furthermore, reaching ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction targets will also depend on the level of digitalisation of the sector. Satellite solutions are essential for achieving a full-scale digital transformation of the automotive sector.

In this context, ubiquitous, reliable, and secure connectivity solutions, which rely on both terrestrial and non-terrestrial capabilities, are a must. Automotive requires connectivity – non connectivity is not an option. To remain competitive, Europe must accelerate the developments of assets and capacities. When developing such future systems, it must onboard the requirements of user markets – including the automotive – by design, and not as an afterthought add-on. A European solution must benefit European industries.

This event will outline needs and requirements of the automotive sector, current solutions, conditions, and requirements for space innovation to provide timely and effective solutions in the future.

The workshop will feature discussions among invited panellists from automotive as well as space industry, agencies, and the political realm to discuss current challenges, expectations as well as necessary steps to be taken.

Participants will also have a chance to learn about relevant innovation support mechanisms. In particular, the European Space Agency (ESA) offers companies support and funding for the development of innovative applications and services in the framework of the ESA Business Applications Programme. Ideas coming from the automotive sector can also be submitted.

The workshop will take place in English.

Participation is free of charge. Prior registration is mandatory until October 20, 2023. A fee of 90€ will be charged for no-shows without cancellation. Cancellation must be received before October 20, 2023.
